Fully Known and Fully Loved | Psalm 139

Sermon Summary

Psalm 139 shows that God intimately knows, creates, and loves us. David experienced this by seeing that God was always with him, knew his thoughts before he spoke them, and uniquely made him in his mother's womb. Even in difficult times, David trusted that he could never hide from God's protective presence.

Today, this applies to us as a comforting reminder that we are never alone or abandoned in our deep struggles. It encourages us to honestly bring our anxieties to God and ask Him to guide our hearts every day.

One Big Idea

Walking with God closely and frequently opening our heart to Him allows us to know Him experientially.

Key Scriptures:

Job 31:4 (NASB): “Does He not see my ways and number all my steps?”

Romans 11:33 (NASB): Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!

Jeremiah 23:24 (NASB): “Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him?” declares the LORD. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the LORD.

Psalm 139:17-18 (NASB): How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.

Truths to focus on this week:

  1. You are fully known: God knows you completely and intimately. We serve a God who is near, not far off, and knows all of your ways perfectly. He knows exactly what you’re going through, and as you take time to pause throughout the day, He will speak to us.

  2. God is always with you: Because God loves you, He does now allow us to hide or runaway from Him. We’re never alone because the Lord is present even in our deepest darkness, and He overcomes it!

  3. God made you and will sustain you: God calls you to be confident in how He has made you. You were created according to His perfect plan, and He made no mistakes in making you as you are. From the moment of conception, He declared you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

  4. God is purifying and strengthening you: You can’t remain neutral toward sin, especially in your own heart. We must bring all of our thoughts, desires, and motivations to the Lord in prayer for Him to expose the sinful ways in us

Reflection Questions

  1. What does it mean to you that God fully knows you completely and intimately? Write some of these things down. How would that change the way you lived and responded to your spouse, your kids, or the way you fought ongoing sin in your life?

  2. Are the thoughts that God has toward you precious and of great worth, or do your thoughts take precedence? How often do you meditate on what God thinks about you? This week, start a note on your phone or a journal and write down all that God thinks toward you.

  3. Are there any beliefs about God or your circumstances that are hindering your closeness with Him? Invite God into your heart to examine you thoroughly, and to purify anything that is not of Him.
