Sermon Summary
At the wedding in Cana, Jesus turned water into wine, revealing His glory and showing that God was bringing something new through Him. This sign invites us to put God’s kingdom first and trust Jesus to replace empty patterns of performance and ritual with abundant life marked by grace, relationship, and love. As Mary told the servants, we are called to obey Jesus fully, trusting that His commands express God’s love and lead us into His purposes. When we trust and obey Him, our faith grows and our lives point to His glory.
The Big Idea
God is releasing faith that He is doing something new in and through us.
Key Scriptures:
John 2:11 (NASB): What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
1 John 5:3 (NASB): For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
John 2:5-7 (NASB): His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.
2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (NASB): For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete.
Truths to focus on this week:
There is a new kingdom priority: Jesus took ordinary water and transformed it into something extraordinary, revealing that He was ushering in something new. He wants to give us eyes to see through the lens of His kingdom, making His kingdom and His purposes our highest priority.
Full and complete obedience: Just as Mary told the servants, we should do whatever Jesus commands us to do. There is a level in which obedience activates things spiritually. Obedience is one of the clearest expressions of our love for Him, and the more we love Him, the more we desire to obey Him.
Abundance mentality: Jesus came that we would have life abundantly. He wants to replace old, empty mindsets of performance and ritual with new ones of grace, relationship, and love.
All of this is for His glory: When the disciples saw Jesus turn the water into wine, their faith grew. In the same way, God desires to reveal His glory in our lives and strengthen our faith. When we believe and trust in Him, there’s no limit to what God can do.
