What Do We Do With Our Disappointment? | John 16:12-24

Sermon Summary

In John 16, Jesus comforts His disciples in the midst of their disappointment. Though suffering and disappointment are inevitable in this life, Jesus promises that our sorrow can be transformed into joy through His presence and the work of the Holy Spirit. He invites us to bring our needs and questions to the Father through prayer, trusting in His love and faithfulness.

Because Jesus has overcome the world, we can experience lasting joy and peace, knowing that His victory is already ours. Rather than retreating or isolating ourselves in disappointment, we are invited to come honestly before Him, receiving His love, hope, and help.

The Big Idea

The message of Scripture is restoration: one day all pain will be turned into joy.

Key Scriptures:

Matthew 20:34 (NASB): Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.

Mark 6:34 (NASB): When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.

Psalm 42:5 (NASB): Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him, for the help of His presence.

Truths to focus on this week:

  1. Receive Jesus’ love: Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus’ deep compassion for people. Jesus is for us, and He comforts us in the midst of disappointment. Often, His love is the most difficult aspect of His character for us to receive, yet it’s the one we need most.

  2. Receive Jesus’ hope: A lack of hope is often the greatest pain in suffering, but we’re able to endure when we see an end in sight. Jesus gives us hope that our present pain will one day give way to great joy. He knows we have questions in our suffering, and He invites us to bring those questions to Him, drawing us into a deeper relationship with Him.

  3. Allow your faith to be stirred through prayer: Jesus invites us to bring our needs to the Father in prayer, trusting in His love and faithfulness. As we depend on Him, our faith is strengthened, our sorrow is turned to joy, and we experience the peace that comes from knowing Jesus has overcome the world.
