Why We Feel Apathetic, Lonely & Defeated | John 15:12-17

Sermon Summary

John 15:12-17 shows us that we feel apathy, loneliness, and defeat when we live for ourselves instead of for Jesus, a family, and a purpose. The remedy begins with receiving and believing God's love for us, then living it out by loving others sacrificially, obeying Jesus and multiplying His life by making disciples.

This kind of love and obedience flow from intimacy. Jesus draws us close, reveals what He's doing, and invites us to partner with Him. Before we can do what He’s asked, we need to be still enough to receive His mercy by telling Him how we really feel and giving Him room to speak, rather than just pushing through on our own strength.

The Big Idea

Jesus invites us out of apathy, loneliness, and defeat—into a life not for ourselves, but for Him, for family, and for purpose.

Key Scriptures:

Zechariah 3:1-5 (NASB): Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right to accuse him. And the LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a log snatched from the fire?” Now Joshua was clothed in filthy garments and was standing before the angel. And he responded and said to those who were standing before him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” Again he said to him, “See, I have taken your guilt away from you and will clothe you with festive robes.” Then I said, “Have them put a clean headband on his head.” So they put the clean headband on his head and clothed him with garments, while the angel of the LORD was standing by.

John 15:17 (NASB): “This I command you, that you love one another.”

Romans 13:8 (NASB): Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the Law.

John 15:14-15 (NASB): You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

Truths to focus on this week:

  1. Receive and believe God’s love: If we do not fully receive God’s love and have Him meet the deepest needs of our hearts, it’s so much easier to fall into sin. Rather than listen to the voice of the enemy, we ought to listen to God’s voice of grace, mercy, and love.

  2. We’re called to love others: Loving others is more than an emotion; it’s a decision to commit, serve, give, and sacrifice for others. The cross shows us that Jesus sacrificed for us, so we can go and do the same to others. God has placed you where you are so you can love the people around you.

  3. We’re called to obey Jesus: Obedience is not legalism, but a natural overflow of our devotion to Jesus. When we surrender our lives to God’s will, we experience the fruit of intimacy with Him. He brings us close to reveal what He’s doing around us and invites us to partner with Him..

  4. We’re called to multiply the life of Jesus into others: A life transformed by the gospel bears fruit that remains by investing in others and making disciples. We can’t do it in our own strength, but we need to ask God to help us by casting our worries on him. Then, we will find ourselves ready for the things of God.

Reflection Questions

  1. When was the last time you paused to ask yourself, "How am I really doing?"—and actually gave God room to answer, instead of pushing through to the next task?

  2. Is your life bearing fruit that remains, or are you too anxious and self-focused to invest in anyone else? How can you cast your worries on God today to invest in who God has placed around you?
