Sermon Summary
Following Jesus comes with a cost, but we are not left alone when opposition comes. In the book of Acts, Stephen modeled for us how to stand firm in truth, keep our eyes on Jesus, forgive those who oppose us, and trust that God is still in control.
Even persecution cannot stop God’s purposes—the gospel continues to advance. In the end, Jesus is worth following no matter the cost.
The Big Idea
When the gospel brings opposition, look to Jesus, pray for those who hurt you, and forgive them. Depend on the Holy Spirit to help you do what you can’t do on your own.
Key Scriptures:
John 15:18 (NASB): If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.
Luke 6:26 (NASB): Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way.
Matthew 18:6 (NASB): But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
Acts 7:60 (NASB): Then falling on his knees, [Stephen] cried out with a loud voice, not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he fell asleep.
Truths to focus on this week:
The world hates us because we expose its sin: Through the word of God and living holy lives, we confront the darkness and corruption of this world. The most loving thing we can do for the lost is to tell them the truth about their need for Jesus.
The world hates us because it doesn’t know God: Those who don’t know God are blind and need to be awakened to the glory of God. our response should not be bitterness but compassion, prayer, and a desire for them to encounter Jesus.
Follow Stephen’s example: In the midst of opposition, he looked up to Jesus, prayed for his enemies, and forgave them. Stephen trusted that God was in control, even over those who hated him. That gave him peace to forgive and hope that the gospel could still change them.

Is there someone who has hurt or opposed you that you are struggling to forgive or pray for? What is keeping your heart from responding like Jesus and Stephen?
Where are you tempted to repay hurt with hurt instead of overcoming evil with good? What would you need to surrender in order to respond like Jesus and Stephen?
