Psalm 25 | Summer in the Psalms
Sermon Summary
As humans we’re made for friendship, and there is a friend who will be by our side for all of eternity. Psalm 25 shows us the deep friendship that King David had with God that persisted through the highs and lows of life.
The key to this friendship is the fear of the Lord, which leans into Him because of His goodness.
One Big Idea
God deeply desires friendship with you. He has invited you into a relationship that will last for eternity. In this friendship, God promises to guard you, guide you, and give you the grace needed to seek Him.
Key Scriptures:
Psalm 25:14 (ESV): The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear Him, and He makes known to them His covenant.
Psalm 25:10 (NASB): All the paths of the LORD are lovingkindness and truth To those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.
Numbers 14:22-24 (NASB): Surely all the men who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice, shall by no means see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who spurned Me see it. But My servant Caleb, because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it.
Jeremiah 32:28-40 (NASB): They shall be My people, and I will be their God; and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me always, for their own good and for the good of their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me.
Truths to focus on this week:
Friendship with God is built on His character: God is the only one truly trustworthy for all things. Rather than allow the circumstances to dictate his confidence in God, David placed his trust in God’s care for him.
God only guides the humble: Human nature causes us to trust ourselves above everything else. This pride blinds us from following God’s leading and receiving what He knows is best for us. Yet, is far more qualified to lead your life than you are, and far better at giving you what is truly best.
Friendship with God is for those who fear Him: To the degree of your fear of God will be the degree of your friendship with Him. God desires friendship with us so deeply that He gave His Son, Jesus, to reconcile us to Himself. Yet every meaningful friendship requires investment from both sides. Are you willing to invest in knowing Him, walking with Him, and enjoying the joy of friendship with God?
Reflection Questions
In what area of your life have you been waiting on God to act? As you wait, what is one way you can seek to obey Him in that area instead of delaying your obedience until after He answers?
Where is fear and a desire for control keeping you from trusting that all the Lord’s ways for you are lovingkindness and truth?
God is eager for friendship with you, and He gave up His Son to make that friendship possible. Is friendship with God your greatest treasure? Is He your closest friend? If not, what is keeping you from the friendship He paid for?
