The Lord is Our Portion | Psalm 16

Sermon Summary

Psalm 16 shows what it means to submit to God’s will and trust Him to supply all our needs, both in this life and the next. David models a life that surrenders burdens to the Lord and walks in His ways.

We are called to spend time with Jesus, find our all in Him, and submit to His shepherding. As we do, we are strengthened in the Lord and come to know Him as our all in all, entrusting our lives fully into His hands.

One Big Idea

When God is your portion, you’ll seek His presence and long for heaven, where you’ll see Him face to face.

Key Scriptures:

Psalm 16:1-2 (NASB): Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in You. I said to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.”

Proverbs 3:5-8 (NASB): Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.

Psalm 16:11 (NASB): You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

Truths to focus on this week:

  1. We are always at the mercy of God: When we recognize that we are entirely at God's mercy, we can release the burdens of life into His good and faithful hands. Any control we feel like we have on our circumstances is a deception.

  2. Surround yourself with godly friends: Godless friends will give you godless advice. We’re most prone to be divided by lies when we’re desperate for relief from ourcircumstances. We need others to remind us to wait on the Lord and be patient for His deliverance.

  3. Everything comes from the Lord: In this Psalm, David declares contentment and thankfulness over his daily portion, his current circumstances, and the greater plan of God for his life. One of the most subtle attacks of the enemy is to have us grumble and complain – don’t let it blind you to the goodness of God in your life.

  4. Delight in the presence of God: No matter what trials may come, we are always safe in His hands. The fullness of joy and life come from God alone, and these promises let us approach Him with expectancy.

Reflection Questions

  1. What area of your life are you trying to control most and need to surrender? What is the next thing God is asking you to obey in that area?

  2. Are you making room in your life to wait on God and seek his counsel for your life? Or do you find yourself turning to distractions or worldly thoughts?
